GCSE Latin ~ Course Overview
Please note: enrolment for this course has now closed. Please see our Certificate in Latin Language & Roman Civilisation or Certificate in Latin Language courses for the replacement to GCSE from September 2010.
What is the content of the Course? The GCSE Course takes you from the end of Book III of the Cambridge Latin Course (or equivalent standard) and prepares you for the GCSE Latin examination in language, literature and civilisation. For full details of the Course content, please see the language, verse literature, prose literature and Roman life pages.
How is the Course structured? The Course contains 28 study sessions. Each session contains a balance of material on language and literature. Sessions require approximately 2.5 - 3 hours study and each contains material to send to your e-tutor for assessment and feedback. In addition to the 28 study sessions, you will study a topic of Roman life throughout your Course, requiring about 15 hours study in all. The total study time for the whole Course is therefore in the region of 100 hours.
Although we recommend studying one session per week if taking the GCSE in the same year as you start, or one session every two weeks if studying over two years, you may progress through the sessions at whatever rate you choose.
When can I start the Course? For examination in summer 2010 you may enrol now and start your studies at any time.
When does the Course end? If you choose to enter the exam, your course will end with the exam in June 2010. The 4 GCSE Latin papers are usually examined between mid-May and early June.
If you wish to follow the Course without entering the examination, your e-tutor will be available until June 2010.
How is the examination structured? GCSE examination assesses understanding of the Latin language, extracts from Latin verse and prose literature and one topic of Roman life in four separate exam papers. For full details please see the examination structure page.
Does CSCP enter me for the examaination? No. While we will take care of your learning, we are not able to enter you for the GCSE Latin examination ourselves. However, we will help you find an examination centre if you are unable to find one. For full details of how to enter for the examination, please see our entering the exam page.
